Painting with Sound and Light
In this demo, I’m using an MPK controller to "paint" with both sound and light.
The setup features a single 16x16 LED grid inside a diffuser, which gives it a soft, glowing canvas feel. The MPK is sending MIDI notes to MAINFRAME, modulated by pitch—so what I play directly shapes the light patterns.
But here’s where it gets interesting: the MPK’s knobs are mapped to MIDI CC controls inside MAINFRAME—parameters like speed, position, hue, and more. At the same time, those same knobs are mapped to synth parameters in Ableton.
That means when I turn a knob, I’m shaping the sound and the visuals at the same time. It’s a synchronized experience—blending the two worlds until you can almost see the sound and hear the light.
As always, I’m not following any strict structure—I’m experimenting. I’m exploring how light and sound can influence each other, and how performance can become a dialogue between the two.
It’s a playful, expressive process. And with MAINFRAME acting as this bridge between audio and visual, it really feels like you’re painting in a new medium—one made of motion, rhythm, and light.
This is the kind of experience I’ve always wanted to create. Where creativity isn’t boxed in, and you can just explore, play, and let the tools respond in ways that feel alive.
