Frequently Asked QUestions (FAQs)
Is MAINFRAME-B compatible with [insert software name]?
If your software is able to send MIDI to an external device (such as a synthesizer) then yes. We've tested it with all major DAWs and other software like TouchDesigner and Puredata.
Does MAINFRAME-B need custom software or VSTs?
No! MAINFRAME-B is USB class compliant, plug-and-play on Mac, Windows, and Linux. Appears just like any other synthesizer.
Especially with B+, with it's 5pin MIDI input, there’s no external software needed to operate it—just send it MIDI.
When will a case be released?
We are currently working on a snap-on, 3D printed case, expected to release mid-2025.
However, if you are interested in MAINFRAME-B, I wouldn't wait. Pick up what you need for now, start playing with and learning the system in the meantime and snap on the case once released!
Is it possible to play with multiple MAINFRAME-B units simultaneously?
Absolutely! It's something we've done frequently, and have experimented with custom sequencer-type pattern generators which animate across MAINRAME units. Some ideas:
- If through USB, several MAINFRAME units can be connected to your computer and will appear as separate MIDI instruments. From there, each can be sent MIDI individually, or collectively, from your software of choice (ie. Ableton, TouchDesigner).
- If using 5pin, you can split the MIDI from a single source through a hub, sent to as many MAINFRAME units as you want. You can set each MAINFRAME as different MIDI channels to get individual behaviour, or intentionally set the same channel for a unified look.
Can I daisy chain multiple LED strips?
Yes! All LED strips, grids, etc. have both input and output connectors, allowing you to daisy chain them together. Be sure to stay within the max number of LEDs MAINFRAME-B can control (currently 480).
How many LEDs does MAINFRAME-B support and why is there a maximum?
Currently 480. As MAINFRAME-B uses individually addressable LEDs (W2812B/Neopixel) to draw animations, each LED takes processing power and has memory overhead - naturally leading a practical maximum.
The total number is selected to balance between data rate and complexity of patterns/color, all while ensuring real-time performance.
Which MIDI messages does MAINFRAME-B respond to?
MAINFRAME-B responds to:
- Note on & off - for starting and stopping patterns
- Control change (CC) - for controlling parameter values, modulation options and ranges
- Program change - for changing the active zone preset
What kind of LEDs does MAINFRAME-B support?
MAINFRAME-B supports addressable RGB LED strips, specifically WS2812B (aka NeoPixels). These use a single data line and are widely available, allowing you to draw patterns and animations versus just the solid colors of normal LED strips. If you're unsure whether your LEDs are compatible, check if they're WS2812B-type or contact us for clarification.
